There are really only two ways to make lots of money using social media. The first way is a concept at the core of internet marketing, and isn’t going to change anytime soon.
It’s called list-building.
By providing valuable content on social media networks like facebook, twitter, and youtube, you can lure prospects to your central hub (i.e. blog) for more information.
At that point, you offer them a friendly bribe (free gift) in exchange for their name and email address – and BAM, they’ve entered your marketing pipeline just like any other lead generation strategy.
Then, and only then, do you promote your products and services. Most people have this completely a** backwards, and vomit sales pitch on their prospects from day 1. You definitely don’t want to be one of those cheeseheads.
The other real method for how to make money with social media is a bit more indirect, and it comes down to content syndication. (in plain English, having people promote and link to your articles, blog posts, videos, etc.)
One of the best things about social media is its viral nature.
Through content syndication, you can create what my friend Charles Hefflin calls the perpetual internet traffic machine.
The more “social buzz” you get for your content, the more exposure and backlinks will be created, resulting in even more traffic and even more exposure for your website.
As you know, more traffic to your website equals more money in your bank account.
Content syndication creates an amazing loop that results in you getting a ton of traffic to your website and it all starts with you producing content that the social networks embrace and promote for its incredible value.

Great point. Don’t forget that another way to build your list with social media is by hosting webinars.
When they register for your webinar, they also get subscribed to your email list.
This is somewhat of a backdoor approach but still works very effectively.
I think you make a couple of great points here, but I think one of the real problems marketers run into is actually creating content that has the potential to go viral. I think many people know this is a method that works and can create a steady traffic stream over time, but don’t necessarily know how to execute it. It’s hard to do.
But your point about list building is huge. I think most people (myself included) forget that this is a tried, tested, and true method that works. DO you have any recommendations on how to get started or where to learn more about how to create lists and market to them?
